Range Bar Sizes
« on: February 02, 2015, 12:42:47 PM »
Many people ask what size range bar should I use. This post should help answer those questions.

When we talk about a 3 tick range bar, you need to understand what constitutes 1 tick on the underlying chart you are trading. For example, the ES (S&P emini) ticks in 1/4 point and therefore 1 tick is 0.25. If you want to create a 3 tick range bar you would therefore use 3 x 0.25 = 0.75R as the setting for your chart.

The default range bar size is 3pips, or a 3R chart. The 3R chart gives price enough room to create new meaningful highs and lows. It also creates a smooth chart that is easy to read.

There are no pre-set values for currency pairs. Users are able to use the ANTS system at any setting on FX charts. However as a default we feel a 3R chart is best.  The pre-sets come for using different techniques. Again users are able to change these settings, but this is what we use.

It is not recommended to go above a 10R chart or below a 2R chart on Forex. Above 10R does not give enough meaningful information when trading with the ANTSSYS system. Below a 2R chart is extremely choppy /volatile and we have found limited success doing this.

Pip Size

Forex

JYP pairs:
1pip = 0.001
2R = 0.002
3R = 0.003
5R = 0.005
10R = 0.01

All other pairs:
1pip = 0.0001
2R = 0.0002
3R = 0.0003
5R = 0.0005
10R = 0.001

Futures

YM = DOW futures emini
1 tick = 1 therefore :-
YM Direction : 10 tick = 10R
YM Entry : 2 tick = 2R

NS = Nasdaq futures emini
1 tick = 0.25 therefore :-
NQ Direction : 10 tick = 2.5R
NQ Entry : 2 tick = 0.5R

ES = S&P futures emini
1 tick = 0.25 therefore :-
ES Direction : 10 tick = 2.5R
ES Entry : 2 tick = 0.5R

CL = Light Crude Oil Futures
1 tick = 0.01 therefore :-
CL Direction : 10 tick = 0.1R
CL Entry : 5 tick = 0.05R

GC = Gold Futures
1 tick = 0.1 therefore :-
CL Direction : 10 tick = 1R
CL Entry : 5 tick = 0.5R

ANTSSYS Techniques

ANTSSYS-ETT:
Directional Chart = 10R
Entry Chart = 3R (you can use 2R for aggressive entries, however the ANTSSYS-ETT is a longer term (60-100+ pips) system and we get a higher probability of a trend change looking at a 3R chart than a 2R chart. 2R can produce too many false entries.)

ANTSSYS-321(FX):
Long Term Chart = 10R
Medium Term Chart = 5R
Entry Chart = 2R

ANTSSYS-Classic:
Entry Chart = 3R
